Customize Your Mobile Marketing Strategy

In the mobile marketing community, we talk a lot about how important it is for every business to have a mobile strategy. We continue to hear that many businesses simply aren’t taking advantage of mobile technology when it comes to mobile marketing. While this is true, it’s not entirely accurate. Sometimes meaningless statistics are being used to determine whether a company is using mobile marketing. Take for instance mobile ad spending. If a company is spending zero on mobile ads, then it is presumed that company isn’t engaging in mobile marketing.

In reality, there are many different ways to do mobile marketing and no two mobile marketing campaigns are the same. Some aspects of mobile marketing are pretty much recommended for anyone, others might work better for certain types of industries, and some can probably be disregarded altogether. So the next time you read an article from a mobile marketing company telling you what direction your businesses needs to go in, take it with a grain of salt. If you’re following the advice of every mobile marketing expert, you’re approaching mobile marketing the wrong way.

Do Your Own Research
Mobile marketing companies say a lot of things. Not all of them are true. Statistics can be misleading and not all mobile marketing strategies will work for everyone. The best approach to take in regards to creating your business’s mobile marketing strategy is to do your own research. That doesn’t mean ignore the advice of experts, it means that you should analyze and look into it further. Determine if a certain strategy would work for your business. If you approach mobile marketing in this way, you will be able to develop a strategy that doesn’t break the bank but is still effective for your company.

Three Things To Remember
No matter how much or how little you want to do with mobile marketing, it’s important to remember these three things:
  • Rely on analytics. Analytics tell you how your marketing strategy is working out. How much of the traffic on your website is coming from mobile devices. If it’s 5%, it might not be a good investment to develop a mobile website. If it’s 50%, then your decision is pretty easy. Analytics will guide you in knowing what areas of mobile marketing can benefit your business
  • Ask, “Do my customers need this?” Today there’s a lot of pressure on businesses to create a mobile app. Research shows, however, that the average person only uses 15 apps per week. So unless your mobile app serves a very important purpose for your customers, it’s probably not worth the cost.
  • Ask “Does it fit with my overall marketing plan?” If any proposed changes to your mobile marketing strategy are distracting from your overall marketing plan you may want to reconsider. Don’t fall into the trap of doing something just to do it. Make sure that every aspect of your mobile marketing strategy is cost effective and is serving a purpose.

Text Marketing: Know The Laws

With so much regulation from our government, it is essential that you know all laws associated with marketing before you move forward with it. Any business can be held liable if there are problems associated with messages, which could get really ugly really fast. You can see what happened when the banks didn’t follow the rules, and more than likely, your small business can’t afford to pay out a settlement like the banks did. So, what are the laws associated with the texting market?

Ban On Texts Without Permission
According to the FCC, you are not legally allowed to send an automatic text without first having permission from the consumer. To get through this, it is good to start by offering a coupon of some sort to all customers who sign up for text alerts. This may be one reason why so many businesses avoid the texting market. If your texts are valuable and are something the customer wants to receive, you shouldn’t have any problem getting them to sign up. The other concern is that you must allow customers to unsubscribe from your texts at any time. This is another reason to make sure you are not spamming a customer’s text message inbox and instead are only texting valuable information.

Signed Permission
Another thing to consider is that customers must sign a consent form in order to legally receive the messages. This law only began at the beginning of October, so it is pretty new. The fine for not getting it signed is $500 to $1,500 a person, according to Business News Daily. This can be as simple as having the customer click a link in a text that then takes them to a digital form to agree to. An “I agree” button would do just fine. This form must say that the signature is not required for a purchase and is optional.

The Good News
The good news is that there is nothing else. Though you would be wise to consider the content of messages before you send them, there’s nothing else you really need to worry about. The biggest concern with the text marketing industry is probably more that your texts will not be valuable and your customers will not want to receive them. To battle this, make sure you are only sending valuable texts to your consumers. Make sure you send no more than 5 texts a month, and even sending 5 a month is pushing it. Once a week would be appropriate, but it would even be better to do it less than that. The only time when it would be appropriate to send more than that would be if the consumer has texted you and asked to have a conversation or asked questions.

Answering Questions
The best part about having a texting program set up is not sending out deals to consumers but allowing them to contact you with questions they may have. Your customers will find it extremely valuable to be able to contact you at any time when they need help.

Getting Ready For Nokia World Announcements

Every cell phone manufacturer has to have some sort of large event to kick off the next best thing. For Nokia, that is called Nokia World. It will be kicking off tomorrow with all kinds of fun goodies and gadgets. What can you expect Nokia to release now?

The Next Big Thing In Screens

Cell phone manufacturers all seem to copy one another to make sure they have the best smartphone available, or at the very least, the next best thing. That is why all of them are working so hard right now to get bigger phones. It was already rumored that the next iPhone will have a larger screen, but now we can expect the next Nokia smartphone to have a larger screen as well. People love being able to use their smartphones as portable and cordless computers, so making the screen a little bigger makes it a little more possible. These devices are called phablets, according to Information Week, and Nokia has named its device the Lumia 1520.

All About The Lumia 1520

Nokia will soon be releasing the Lumia 1520, but is it even worth a second look? I’d say so. Not only will it have a 6-inch HD display screen, it comes with a variety of other cool features. Get great pics with a 20-megapixel camera, and expect a large battery life with the 3,400mAh battery. You can get different sizes of storage from 16 GB up to 32 GB, and the quad-core 800 processor should make it fast enough to use for all your functions.

More or less, this Nokia phablet is enough to compete seriously with other top-selling smartphones such as the iPhone and Samsung Galaxy Note. Maybe you should take a look and see if the new phone is good enough for you.

Other Things New From Nokia

According to The Verge, Nokia will also be debuting their Lumia 2520 at Nokia World this year. Expected to have all the standard expected from tablets, it will also focus heavily on the quality of images taken with the camera. There have even been pictures of the device released in a red color, so it is expected that color options will be available. Following Apple’s lead, Nokia is also expected to announce low-cost alternatives to their products for people who want the nice stuff without having to pay so much.

There will also be many accessories available for these products, though none of them have leaked yet. One of these may be the Nokia Guru device expected to be announced. Rumors say that it is a small music player that can be used anywhere. Some reports say that it can pair up with phones while others say it is a stand-alone device. Either way, you can expect a lot of fun and new things to be shown off during the Nokia World event. It is one you probably don’t want to miss, so make sure you check it out tomorrow!

SMS Marketing Works For Small Businesses Too

Walmart and Redbox aren’t the only companies striking it rich with text message marketing. In fact, thousands of small businesses are benefitting from it as well. As more and more business owners are realizing the tremendous opportunity in being able to reach out to potential customers in seconds, they are venturing out into the world of mobile marketing. While taking that first step can be a little scary, business owners are finding that it was worth it.

Why Send Texts?
When you look at how text message marketing works, you will wonder why you were ever afraid to try it. Compared to other forms of advertising, text message marketing is very cost effective. Sending a message to a customer costs literally pennies but yields amazing results. Not convinced? Consider that 99% of texts are at least read. The vast majority of those are read within seconds of being received. Think about your own experience. Are you more likely to delete an unread text or an unread email? If you need to get time sensitive information to a customer, a phone call might go unanswered, an email may not be read until it’s too late, but wherever your customers are and whatever they’re doing, chances are they’ll get your text.

Another advantage to text message marketing is that it’s fun and simple to use. It’s as simple as choosing a text messaging service to work with, building your contact list, creating your message, and sending it out. There’s no faster way to build your brand and generate excitement about your products or services.

Building Your Contact List
In order for any text message marketing campaign to be successful, you need an audience. Texting falls under the jurisdiction of the Federal Communications Commission. In other words, it’s closely monitored and there are rules in place to prevent consumers from receiving unwanted spam. Before you can start sending out texts, you need to make sure that you have a list of numbers that you have permission to contact. Make sure you are up to date with FCC regulations and that all of the people on your list have given consent to receive your texts.

The best way to build your initial list is to make an introductory offer. In return for their permission to text them, they receive value right off the bat in the form of a discount or freebie. You continue to build your list by advertising your SMS marketing campaign every way you can.

Keeping Your New Customers
At the start of your marketing campaign you’re going to see an increase in customers. The real secret is keeping them. If you want your new customers to keep coming back for more, it’s crucial that they continue to receive value in return for remaining on your contact list. Occasionally send exclusive offers that only those on your contact list can receive. Finally, make sure you don’t abuse the power that comes with the ability of contacting your customers on a whim. Texts every day are excessive and will quickly cause your customers to lose interest and ask to be removed from your list. As long as you are concise, use moderation, and give value, your text message marketing campaign is sure to be a success.

Not So Surprising News From Apple On iPhone 5c

It was easily predicted that Apple wouldn’t do very well trying to sell a cheaper version of the iPhone by releasing the 5c. This phone was intended to be sold to customers that could not afford a more expensive iPhone or wanted to buy something cheaper for their kids. Mostly, Apple was trying to hit foreign markets with a cheaper iPhone option. But, of course, it was not successful.

Why Will Nobody Buy The iPhone 5c?
The iPhone 5c didn’t do well because of a few reasons. First, it was still more expensive than many other smartphones, even if it was cheaper than the iPhone 5s. Parents trying to get a cheap smartphone for their kids would rather pay almost nothing than a hundred dollars or so for an iPhone. Or, if they are going to pay for a smartphone, they’d rather just get the nicer one. People in other countries were targets, but the same situation applied. If they could afford a nicer phone, they wanted the iPhone 5s instead of the 5c, and those who couldn’t afford the 5s couldn’t get the 5c either.

Last Ditch Attempt To Get More Sales
The price of the iPhone 5c was dropped everywhere to about $50. With expectations high, companies were prepared to sell thousands of them, but hardly any ended up making it into the phone market. By the time the price dropped, people had already moved on and weren’t interested. According to ABC, Apple has asked many of its suppliers to slow production of pieces used in the iPhone 5c. This indicates there have been fewer sales than expected by the technology giant.

Is It All Bad?
It actually isn’t a bad thing for Apple to sell fewer of the cheap phone and more of the expensive phone. There still have been plenty of sales, and Apple is making quite a bit of money off the phone sales. Even though there aren’t as many iPhone 5c phones selling as expected, Apple made more money off the ones that sold than they would have if the iPhone 5c was never released.

What Would You Do?
You could choose to get a more expensive iPhone, a cheaper one, or pick from the other Android options available. Almost all of them will have the ability to get you text messages, email and browse the web. Those are the basic functions of most phones. The only reason to really pick the iPhone over an Android is to make it easy to have the same thing available to all of your devices, such as your phone, computer, tablet, ipod, and more. The technology on other devices is just as good and possibly even better with the new curved screens and smartwatches being released by other manufacturers. If you want a new phone and can’t decide what to pick, just ask yourself if you would rather have the latest technology or most popular phone. Then you will be able to decide.

Latest And Greatest: Smartwatch Phase

As we’ve discussed before, the difference between making it and breaking it for big cell phone companies is having the next best thing. And even if you didn’t invent it yourself, you still have to offer it. That is exactly why smartphones all have similar new features and why all the cell phone companies seem to be running to release new smart watches.

Keeping Up With The Joneses

Normally, keeping up with the Joneses has a negative connotation to it, but in the smartphone manufacturing world, it isn’t so bad. It just means creating better technology to get more sales. According to the LA Times, there is a new Sony smartwatch available and a Google smartwatch isn’t that far behind. Instead of sitting by and waiting to see whether or not people actually like the smartwatch before creating technology similar to it, these manufacturers have just jumped right on the bandwagon. After all, What could go wrong with a giant, bulky watch that doesn’t have nearly as many capabilities as you would like?

Smartwatch Reviews

Though the idea of having something close at hand that keeps you updated on everything is brilliant, the smartwatch hasn’t quite perfected it. Most people who have gotten a smartwatch say it probably isn’t worth your money today but may be worth your money in a few years when it has been perfected. Right now, it mostly just notifies you of text messages and email alerts, but it doesn’t allow you to browse the internet or do a quick analysis of information. Hopefully, that will be fixed in the near future.

The people I know who want the new Galaxy Gear really want the new smartwatch but more out of a way to play with it and use the latest technology than to actually use it as a helpful device. There is nothing “cooler” than having the newest technology, so even if it isn’t perfect, many technology buffs will hop on board.

Businesses To Jump On Board

Those of you out there with a business looking to profit off the new smartwatch sensation should probably consider working on mobile advertising. It is critical that your website is prepared for mobile viewing and that buying products can be easily done online. Make sure you have social media ready for viewing and that your business is interactive with the customers. Open communication is the most important part of getting and keeping new customers. Texting programs need to be clear and easy to use.

One of the only things even available on the smartwatch as of right now is texting. That means you need to make sure texting is set up in your business. If you don’t have any kind of texting program set up, it will be really hard to keep up with the times. Those who have texting already set up will be well ahead. There is nothing better than having the ability to quickly relay a message about your business knowing it will appear on the customer’s wrist. How much closer can you get?

HTC One Max: Keeping It All In One Place

With technology getting better and better every day, you would think you could get everything you want in one device. Instead, we have to own a computer, a tablet, and a smartphone. It ends up costing you a lot of money to own all three, and it is really annoying to keep track of them. Well, fortunately, the HTC One max might be the solution to your biggest problem. Instead of buying all three, you can probably get away with just one.

What’s in a name? Everything

The name “One” is definitely an indication of an all-in-one kind of device, according to the Sydney Morning Herald. The screen is almost seven inches wide, meaning it is almost the size of a tablet but can also be used as a phone. The reason for such a large phone is simple. The phone has become a lifeline for many people and the main source of internet usage more recently. HTC wanted to create a phone that would allow consumers to easily access and browse the internet as well as replace many other devices used in your home. It may not be quite a phone or quite a tablet, but it sure does a great job of doing both. No more trying to wade through all your devices to pick the best one. You can just pick up your one phone and do it all.

Smartphone evolution

Have you ever noticed how often people are on their phones? Go to dinner tonight and look around. You’ll probably see a lot of people just sitting on their phones, even with other people at the table with them. The smartphone used to be something we only used sometimes when we needed it, but it has evolved into something much more. It is now the thing we use for everything. When you lose a smartphone, you practically lose your life, especially if you use it regularly for work.

Other cool features

Things you can expect from the HTC One max mirror other features being found in new phones. For example, it will have a fingerprint scanner similar to the new iPhone. It will also have a removal back where you can put a SIM Card and MicroSD card. It has 32GB internal storage too, so there is plenty of room for everything you could possibly want to do on your phone. The new Sense 5.5 will be included in the new phone, which will allow you to flip through the screen without hassle. The Android skin will come with many other features to make things easier on you.

What this means for you

As a business, you will need to start working hard to ensure your advertising works well with these kinds of platforms. People will be spending more time on their phones doing daily activities as time goes by, so you should be prepared to start advertising there. Work on texting first. It is the first and most basic principle to mobile advertising and will get you very far.

Six SMS Marketing Tips For Your Business

If you’re new to text message marketing (or SMS marketing) then you’ve made an important step for the success of your business. Now that you’ve got your feet wet, it’s important to continue to fine tune your text message marketing campaign to make it more effective. Here is a look at six tips that, if followed, will drastically improve the success of your SMS marketing efforts.

Special Offers Should Be Special
This may sound like common sense, but you’d be surprised how many businesses make this mistake. A 5% off coupon probably isn’t going to get the job done. Your customers have opted in to receive your text messages because they were excited about getting great deals. If they’re not getting value out of your business’s texts, they’ll opt out. Now, this doesn’t mean you have to break the bank giving away free stuff. Just make sure that your deal is good enough to excite your customers while still making you money.

Be Original
When it comes to businesses that use SMS marketing, you’re not the only fish in the sea. If you want to stand out to customers you’re going to need to be unique. Look for ways to display your business’s originality. Be creative and be fun, and above all, experiment with different options to make your business stand out to customers. It’s better to err on the side of being a little adventurous than to be perceived as being safe. If you need some help with this, a text message marketing company can offer many suggestions for making your marketing efforts more creative.

Be Considerate
While you want your texts to be fun and representative of your business’s style, you don’t want to offend your customers. Make sure that every message you send is not going to offend in any way. Also, make sure that your texts are sent in compliance with telecommunication laws. That means no texts before 8 a.m. or after 10 p.m. It also means, not texting anyone unless they have given their permission by opting in. Finally, being considerate includes how often you text. Even one text every day is probably overkill. Limit your texts to times when you have something exciting to offer your customers.

Think About Timing
If you run a donut and coffee shop, you probably shouldn’t be texting your customers late at night. They’re going to forget about whatever offer you texted them about by the next morning. Make sure that you’re sending your messages at times when they will be the most effective at motivating your customers.

Know Your Audience
This cannot be stressed enough. Your best customers will be those who feel that your business relates with them. You cannot know your audience enough. Know everything about them and find ways to relate with them and they will return the favor by doing some free marketing for you.

Advertise Your SMS Campaign
Your SMS campaign can’t do much good if your customers don’t know about it. Take every opportunity to advertise it. Use social media, your business’s website, and any other avenue you can think of to let your customers know about your text message marketing efforts.

Problems With The iPhone 5

With the iPhone 5s and 5c being released recently, it is about time that we start hearing all the problems associated with it. We all know electronics go bad and the new ones always have the worst problems Maybe in about six months, the new iPhone will actually be working fine again. But by that time, a new one will soon be released, and it may not even be worth it anymore. I guess it’s all what you want. It’s time to see what the big problems with the iPhone are this year.

Big Blue Screen

There is nothing worse than having your phone freeze up on you, but what if you are just getting a screen completely blue? What does it mean? It’s almost as bad as when your xbox is showing the red circle of death. iPhone users have begun reporting this problem, according to PC Magazine. The blue screen of death, as many refer to it, occurs after you try and shut your phone down while in certain apps. People are used to being able to leave their phone in an app and press the power button to simply put their phones to sleep, but instead, the blue screen appears. Because it has been reported by a number of individuals, people assume it has to do with an error on Apple’s part.

Battery Draining

Another issue reported by quite a few iPhone users is a battery draining problem. According to PC Magazine, this is likely a bug in the phone that is causing the battery life to be significantly shorter than before. The only thing Apple has said on the issue is that you preserve battery life and get a longer battery life out of your iPhone by turning off some background apps.

Problems With iMessage

The other big concern that people have been reporting is a problem with iMessage. PC Mag explained that some of the messages just won’t send while others are delayed for an extended period of time. Though there have still been complaints about this issue, it will likely be fixed by Apple fairly quickly in order to avoid angry customers trying to return their phones.

Coming Out With Something New

Every time a new iPhone is released, people get really excited. For weeks leading up to the release people are talking, and before the announcement of the new phone, people always want to know what is coming. Even now, when the release of the next new iPhone is still a year away, people have started spreading rumors about what to expect in the new iPhone. According to PC Mag, the new iPhone will probably have a redesign including a facelift to the screen size. Bigger is better, or at least it has been lately. I remember when the big thing was making phones smaller and smaller, but now we’ve turned the other direction I guess. If you are willing to wait another year, you may be able to get something between the size of a current iPhone and iPad.

Mobile Marketing Is All About Context

The key to any successful marketing campaign is knowing your audience. But when it comes to mobile marketing, simply knowing who you’re trying to reach is insufficient. Mobile marketing poses its own unique challenges. To succeed with mobile marketing you have to know where your audience is, what they’re doing, and what kind of mobile device they’re using. Success in mobile marketing is all about understanding contextual awareness when it comes to your target audience.

What Is Contextual Awareness?

Whether you’re designing an ad campaign for television, radio, print, or mobile device, contextual awareness is critical. As a marketer you need to know the context in which your target audience will be receiving the advertisement. The challenge for mobile marketers is that the context is always different. With television ads, marketers can reasonably assume that the average viewer will be seated on a couch or chair most likely in the comfort of their own home. Similarly, the creators of radio ads know that most listeners will be on the road. Even PC ads are likely to be seen by people who are generally in the same context.
Mobile is different because people are using different devices in different ways. Because mobile devices are designed to go everywhere their owners go, there are limitless possibilities as to what your audience will be doing when they see your advertisement or receive your text.

Mobile Is About Immediacy

While you can never be sure about what your audience is up to, you can count on the fact that they are on the go, and most likely busy. They probably won’t be sitting down and they certainly won’t have the time to view a 30 second ad or read a paragraph. You have to keep in mind that your customer is only using one thumb on a 4-5 inch screen and has the attention span of someone from the Twitter generation.  With mobile users, it’s all about immediacy. People turn to their smartphones when they have a question; they want to find the answer in seconds. If you don’t answer their question in a matter of seconds, you’ve lost them. In order to gain these customers, you’ll need to put more thought into context and the relevance of your ads.

Change Your Strategy

If your marketing strategy requires people to pinch and zoom in order to view content designed to be seen on a desktop or laptop, you’re going to have to adapt in order to reach mobile customers. Explore ways that your company can be more mobile friendly. As a minimum, have a mobile website. Mobile ads should be concise. Explore creative ways to reach customers in a situation where your ad will be the most powerful—for instance, when they are near your business location. By being aware of context, your mobile marketing campaign will be more successful.
